Shitbox Rally Summer 2023
Our Story …

We are really pleased to announce that Lesley and Toula are putting down their single origin almond lattes and are taking part in the summer 2023 Shitbox Rally!! We will be driving our shitbox with the rest of the participants from Rockhampton to Hobart.

The Shitbox Rally is the largest community lead fundraiser for the Cancer Council in Australia and is now in its 13th year. Part of the participation is that all teams have to raise a minimum of $5,000 but most teams raise well above this amount as you can see with the 2023 Summer rally target set at $2,000,000 plus.

These funds go to the Cancer Council and we are extremely proud to be doing our part to support such a worthy charity. The fundraising is the hard part, so any donation you can give is greatly appreciated. Please make sure to follow our progress via this page and the blog post below.

Here's what I'm doing …

Shitbox Rally is the adventure of a lifetime challenging participants and their cars, worth no more than $1,500, over a 7 day across Australia endeavour to raise money for cancer research.

The rally is not a race – it’s a fun, colourful, unpredictable adventure with participants travelling at their own pace in smaller groups. Vehicles often break down but “we never leave anyone behind” and each night is spent camping beneath the stars and celebrating the day’s achievements. It all adds up to an incredible opportunity to see Australia’s vast and beautiful countryside and make lifelong friends, many brought together after experiencing cancer themselves or seeing cancer impact family and friends.

Since it’s inception the rally has been the largest fundraiser for the Cancer Council nationally.

Hi Kate, Lesley here. I wanted to say thank you so much for your more than generous donation and for being the first person to donate to our cause!! Toula and I are still wondering what we've let ourselves in for as neither of us is really the rallying type but with each donation we get a little bit closer to finding out. Again thank you.

So with all the charities out there, why the Cancer Council and why the Shitbox Rally?

In 2013 I found out I had breast cancer and without cutting edge cancer treatment would not be here today. Sadly several of the people I met and friended during those delightful chemo sessions weren't so lucky. I have also lost family and friends to the disease and so fundraising for cancer research was an obvious choice for me.

My daughter and her partner have been on 6 Shitbox rallies (and counting) and the thought of crossing outback Australia in a crappy car was something Toula and I joked about over coffee. We were happy for someone else to do the hard yards as the dirt, dust and bad coffee were not things we thought we could cope with. However over the years hearing about these rallies and the money raised, we've warmed to the idea and a couple of months ago we lost all reason and came to the conclusion that we should try and help out more directly.

We're not exactly outback types with my idea of 'slumming it' is staying in a hotel that doesn't have individual shampoo and conditioner in the bathroom. The only strenuous driving we do currently is to seek out good coffee shops so this whole trip will be a bit of an experience for two old girls. Don't worry as we will be taking our single origin with us but will will have to forgo the Gaggia (as it won't fit in the car) and will instead be taking a drip filter.

I would be grateful if you would please help us with a donation however small as every bit helps.

Regards,

Lesley

Like most of us, cancer has touched me through family and friends, notably my dad and dear stepmother-in-law, who succumbed to this terrible disease over 15 years ago despite various forms of treatment.

After seeing other people participate in these rallies over the years, we joked about having a go, so we signed up, and crazy enough as it seems, we were accepted.

The rally will take place in March 2023; we hope to complete the drive from Rockhampton to Hobart. All funds raised will go to the Cancer Council.

We will definitely be out of our comforts and missing out on a latte or two, but hey, what an experience!

It's not going to be easy, but it's a fantastic cause and, more than likely (for me anyway), a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The thought of driving a shitbox across Australia is both frightening and exciting.

We would really appreciate and be grateful for any donation that you could help us with.

warmest regards

Toula

The Impact, Outcomes & Charity

Shitbox Rally is a dedicated fundraising event for cancer research with funds going to Cancer Council.

Cancer Council is one of the largest non-government funders of cancer research in Australia. We conduct and fund research studies across all cancers and all stages of the cancer journey.

Thanks to the community funds raised such as Shitbox Rally we can fund world-class research that reduces the impact of cancer for everyone.

More than $30 million over the past 12 years has been raised by Box Rallies to date, supporting ground-breaking projects such as:

 • A research study to develop a vaccine that protects against lymphoma cancers.
 • A research trial to standardise international guidelines on melanoma removal.
 • A research grant to revolutionise the treatment of pancreatic cancer.

These projects wouldn’t be possible without your support.
