We heard about the Shitbox Rally when Lyndon was looking for a part for his VE Commodore and came across a guy who, in lieu of payment, asked for a donation to his rally team!
We were excited by the idea and quickly decided that instead of an overseas trip or big party, we would celebrate our 30th birthdays seeing outback Australia and raising money for an amazing cause.
As luck would have it, we were accepted into the Summer 2023 rally departing Rockhampton, and hopefully heading West, where Jacob spent the first 10 years of his life growing up.
Jacob has vague memories of a variety rally that used to stop at Muttaburra State School (google it!) - the first time he remembers seeing a car that wasn't a 4WD or road train! Participating in the rally means a lot.
We've also recruited a couple more mates who have a car in the same rally - nothing like a bit of rivalry and competition.
We've purchased a Suzuki Carry van from Geelong for $700 - it needs new tyres, new windscreen and likely new door handles to make roadworthy - not bad for a cheapy that's already done one lap of Australia.
Please consider donating to the team - the Cancer Council is a great and worthy recipient of your support who does so much against the battle with Cancer, an awful disease many have been touched by in some capacity.
$50 is a box of beer, or another 1% of the way toward our goal If Lyndon or Jacob have ever supported one of your fundraisers, helped you move house or otherwise done you a favour, please tip in and help us reach our goal.
Shitbox Rally is the adventure of a lifetime challenging participants and their cars, worth no more than $1,500, on a 7 day drive across Australia to raise money for cancer research.
The rally is not a race – it’s a fun, colourful, unpredictable adventure with participants travelling at their own pace in smaller groups. Vehicles often break down but “we never leave anyone behind” and each night is spent camping beneath the stars and celebrating the day’s achievements. It all adds up to an incredible opportunity to see Australia’s vast and beautiful countryside and make lifelong friends, many brought together after experiencing cancer themselves or seeing cancer impact family and friends.
Since it’s inception the rally has been the largest fundraiser for the Cancer Council nationally.
Shitbox Rally is a dedicated fundraising event for cancer research with funds going to Cancer Council.
Cancer Council is one of the largest non-government funders of cancer research in Australia. We conduct and fund research studies across all cancers and all stages of the cancer journey.
Thanks to the community funds raised such as Shitbox Rally we can fund world-class research that reduces the impact of cancer for everyone.
$41 million over the past 13 years has been raised by Box Rallies to date, supporting ground-breaking projects such as:
These projects wouldn’t be possible without your support.
